Are you making the most of your current circumstances?
I was raised in the North of England. For the first eighteen years of my life I lived in a small market town in Yorkshire.
When I say small, I mean very small. We’re talking one high school that served the whole town. No supermarkets or high street shops. The local industry was mainly textiles mills and if you didn’t want to work in a factory, jobs were scarce. So when I left school one week before my 16th birthday with no qualifications to speak of, my options were limited.
I dreamed of leaving the small town and experiencing what the rest of the world had to offer. I did find a job and although it was very low pay and I didn’t enjoy it, I spent the next couple of years saving and planning my escape.
As soon as I was able I left and travelled south. Working in London for several years I was able to keep a roof over my head but I still didn’t enjoy the work. I accepted that supporting myself was the priority.
My life continued in much the same way for quite some time. A cycle of living in survival mode until I realised something had to change. I’d had the courage to leave my hometown in search of something better, only to continue living an unfulfilled life when I got there.
I knew there had to be a better way so I started the process of personal development and I realised what I actually wanted was the freedom to do what I wanted on my own terms. So I decided to leave my job and start my own business as an entrepreneur.
Fast forward to 2021 – Now I run my own business, I have the freedom I once imagined and I’m a Goal Achievement Coach. I empower women to create and live the life they truly want and deserve.
This year marks thirty years since I made my plan to leave and during that time I’ve changed a lot. The most important thing I’ve learned is that we can create the life we choose for ourselves. We get to decide the direction we take and ultimately, were we end up. We get to decide it all. It starts with us.
All we need is a dream, a desire to improve ourselves and the courage to take a risk to make it happen.
