Building Momentum

While it’s a great thing to take action and put your ideas into motion, that in itself will only take you so far. Because let’s face it, taking action is exactly that. An action. Just one act. If you’re going to make any progress on your dreams, something else is required. You need to start building momentum. You must to expand on the energy you created when you took that first step. Harness it and use it to create more of the same. A series of small actions that will combine over time to project you into your future as you imagined it in your visualisations.

Momentum can influence our outcomes, and as such it’s important to build positive momentum for our projects rather than getting bogged down with distractions and the negative momentum they can bring. If you’re really serious about building momentum for your life or your business and you’re ready to commit to creating it, you need to take action regularly. This means getting laser focused on one thing and taking consistent action every single day in the direction of your goal.

What Can You Change?

There are lots of ways you can do this. I get the best results when I dedicate thirty minutes of every day to the activity I’m committing to. When I do this each day, at around the same time I find it not only gives me structure but I’m able to give my full attention to it and achieve so much more from the experience than just progress.

For example, I’ve always been interested in writing and journaling. And I write regularly but it’s usually for the purpose of writing on a particular subject for a blog post or a book chapter. I didn’t really write anything just for me that wouldn’t be seen by others. About how I was feeling, what was going on in my life at that moment or what I wanted out of life.

Schedule A New Activity

However, when I took the time to sit down for thirty minutes each day with my notebook and wrote whatever came to my mind with no expectations or word count to reach, I was astonished at how therapeutic this process was. I got clarity on my goals and intentions. My writing improved. Accessing my stream of consciousness became easier. I found inspiration for new ideas. My confidence to share my own story increased, along with my ability to regulate my emotions.

All this came from the small practice of consistently writing in my journal for thirty minutes every morning. I didn’t know I would gain all these benefits when I started, I just knew that by dedicating this time to myself each day, I would be building momentum in a positive way. I know this might not seem like a big thing to a lot of people, but when you make time for yourself in this manner you open yourself to a whole world of possibilities.

Small Steps Lead To Big Things

Building momentum starts with the smallest of steps and continues with more of those small steps. Until eventually, they all combine into massive progress. Then, you’re ready to take the next small step in a totally different direction. Which in turn leads to more small steps and again over time, enormous growth happens without you even realising how far you’ve come. It’s only when you compare your journey year on year. Or decade on decade, that you can see that the momentum you created has changed your life completely, and you’ve arrived in the life you dreamed about all those years ago.

Get Started Today

So, what will you do to start building momentum in your life? What can you commit to today that will move you closer to the life you dream of? The hardest part is getting started. Taking action isn’t easy but it’s certainly the most rewarding thing you can do for yourself and your future. Once you take those first few small steps, it gets easier and then you won’t find it as difficult to take the next few steps. Before you know it, you’ll be building momentum and you’ll be so proud of the progress you’re making.

Use that energy to inspire yourself. If you can start the snowball effect of building momentum for something small, you can do the same thing for something big. What might that be? What are your big hopes and dreams? Why not make your next project a much larger one and just see what happens when you start applying the principles of building momentum to that? It’s time to dream bigger. Don’t limit yourself. You can achieve anything you desire if you commit to it, and use a solid strategy for building momentum.

Let The Momentum Guide You

Once you start the process, the momentum becomes a continuous source of energy that guides you, motivates you and inspires you to do more, be more and achieve more. You’ll find that you look forward to taking on new challenges and creating new, exciting ventures for yourself. When you give yourself this power, it’s hard to stay stuck in the place that you started. New opportunities will come your way and instead of shying away from them, you’ll be tempted to take them on even when you have no idea how you’ll make it work.

All this and more is possible, and it starts with you. It starts with your decision to want more for yourself. It begins when you decide you want change. When you want that change enough, you’ll feel compelled to make and act on a plan that will deliver you to your intended destination. Once you begin that process and feel the power of your actions as the momentum builds, you’ll never look back. You’ll be carried along with strength of your vision.

When the time comes for you to begin, remember these steps.

Start small

What is one thing you can change or start doing that will contribute directly to your goal? Making a small change to your daily routine can have a big impact on your progress. Once momentum starts it’s easier to keep it going.

Take action each and every day

Just one small action is required but you must be consistent. Devote yourself to doing this task until it becomes part of your life. Taking action consistently is the key step you need to implement if you want to be successful. Block time in your diary dedicated only to this new habit. Having nothing else on your schedule at the same time each day will give you the space you need to give your full attention to the task.

Commit to your dreams

It doesn’t matter how big or small they are. It might seem ridiculous that you’re even considering it but go with it. You had the idea for a reason, so now is your time to bring it to life step by step. Remind yourself often of why you want this. Think of your desired outcome and visualise your life once you achieve it. Committing to yourself and this process won’t be easy but I can guarantee it will be worth it.

Building momentum is easier the further you go with your plan. As you start to achieve, you’ll need to change your identity to match the person you are becoming as you move through your personal growth. Stay committed to your goals, take small steps every day and your progress will be evident as you achieve your goals and set new ones. You are capable of amazing things, take that first step today and see where it takes you.
